Easter

Barn Name: Easter
Breed: Quarter Horse (Purebred but Not Registered)
Height: 15.1h
Age: 18 y/o (Approx DOB April 15, 1998)
Gender: Mare
Colour: Palomino

Health: Excellent Overall Health. Vaccinations Just Done June 21, 2016.

Lameness: Feet Grow Quickly, Need Trimming Every 4-6 Weeks in Summer. History of Cracked Hooves; Responds Well to Hoof Treatment (Fiskes 2x/wk in Summer). Apparent Lameness in Front Feet Since July/2015 and Slight Lameness On/Off for a Couple Years. Vet Checked Her Out on June 21, 2016 And Agreed with Our Thoughts That She Has RingBone. XRays Have Not Been Done. There is an Injection that can be done called OSPHOS. Most Recent Farrier: Assessment/Trim by Kate Romanenko on May 3, 2016. Trimmed by Kaileen St Antoine on June 20, 2016.

Vices: Sometimes scrappy with challengers to her authority, but doesn't always win. Not great with foot handling, not all her fault; owner couldn't bend for three years for regular work. Now has sore right front foot, so bearing weight on it makes lifting left for any length of time a challenge. With patience and good handling at Claire's over a few years, she has improved immensely with trimming. Is needy; handles best with buddy horse nearby.

Personality: Pleasant with people, dominant mare, tends to be the 'alarm horse' on watch for threats; was a shy filly, didn't bond easily with humans; little training other than basics until late in life; naiive about some usual horse-human activities. Loves having her behind scratched; sometimes leans her butt in to get this treat. Enjoys a neck scratch, especially underside; not that keen on head handling unless relaxed, and from the shoulder works best. But bends head and face way down for a piece of carrot. Enjoys being groomed. Is a funny character; sometimes nuzzles your back or lifts your shirt when working on her feet. I'm not 100 per cent comfortable with those nippers but she hasn't bitten me yet! Sometimes I reach back and scratch her muzzle; it has all helped to lower her resistance when her feet are being handled. She really has come a far way; some of her early years' hoof handling did not include patience. Loading in trailer was surprisingly easy. If she trusts you, and you are patient with her, calm, and laugh with her, she will work with you. Bonding is key.

History/Training: Began basic training at 12 yrs old with new (current) owner who knew her since birth. At first, flighty and resistant. With patience, grew to enjoy attention. Longes, knows voice commands, responds to verbal praise, butt and crest scratch. Was ridden at walk only, with or without saddle, only with bitless bridle, which she responds to very well. Was worked in a ring with a couple of other buddy horses loose. Doing well at to age 14, then not ridden due to owner's illness. Very light bareback riding at a walk resumed June/2015, then injury / lameness occurred or became apparent. Not ridden since. Other: not blanketed by current owner, possible training needed. Is ridiculous about spray; I started getting her used to a water bottle spray on me and she still reacts. Will take some work. I just wipe with some vaseline under belly, in ears and under chin in buggy seasons, and on back / neck with a bit of Fiskes (and on hooves as well; works great for her).

Future/Suitability: If her right front soreness heals, personally I don't see much other than perhaps a light walk around a ring, bitless bridle, with or without saddle, but with a buddy horse. She might enjoy games and play, as she is curious and enjoys attention and lots of praise. She is a loving horse with a checkered training history, not her fault. Needs patience, kindness, and a constant companion for her optimal contentment.

Additional Info: She is very much loved. I've known her since she was a baby, and watched her grow, played with her throughout her life. Any questions, I'll do the best I can to answer.
